My Toddler Just Asked Me What My Job Was...

This week my precocious 2.5-year-old daughter was standing behind the cash register of a makeshift shop that I set up for her. We were in the middle of playing when she asked me, “what’s your job?” Her question stumped me.

When an adult asks me what my job is, I still don’t know what to say because at the age of 32, I find myself in the middle of two careers, at the start of a career transition and a full-time mother of two under three without any childcare.

My answer to her was, “depends on the day.” Because that’s the truth for many people like me, who have made the choice to work for themselves, pursue creative careers and parentpreneurship or a combo of all the above. As I begin to explain some of the things that I do (and her tiny toddler eyes glaze over), anxiety begins to boil up inside of me for my lack of focus…

I remind myself that being a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none has served me well my whole life. I tell myself it is not only okay to pursue many careers in life, it is for my sanity.

Do you find yourself in similar shoes? Would love to hear from you cruz@milowekids.com
