10 Kids Books We’re Reading This Earth Day

My favorite way to celebrate any holiday is through books, so in honor of Earth Day this week, we’re sharing some of our favorite kids books about nature. In no particular order, here are our current favorite titles:

  • Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers - I’ve talked about this book many, many times on our Instagram because it really is that good. Apple TV+ even just made it into a 36 minute movie that I highly recommend. This book tells the story of what it means to be human and live on the planet earth. It talks about how big the universe is and how we’re all connected. It’s a really great message and Oliver Jeffers’ illustration style is so beautiful you could pull any page out and frame it.

  • The Honeybee by Kristen Hall - I love this informative book about the life of bees. It’s amazing how much you learn from kids books! We’ve been taking this book out to our front yard a lot the last few weeks and reading it while watching the bees buzz around.

  • We Are The Gardeners by Joanna Gaines - This book tells the story of The Gaines family (aka the Fixer Upper/Magnolia family) learning to garden together. They start with a few single plants, have some obstacles like overwatering and plants dying and eventually create a big, beautiful garden.

  • Hike by Pete Oswald - Hike is written by one of my favorite illustrators, Pete Oswald, so not only are the pictures beautiful, but the story is totally open ended with no words. I love books without words because it really allows you to create a dialogue and call out different elements as you and your kiddo notice new things with every subsequent read.

  • The Hike by Alison Farrell - A perfect book to prep your little one for outdoor exploration! The three little girls in this book set out on an adventure into the woods and we get to see everything they find and keep track of in their notebook.

  • The Big Book of Bugs and The Big Book of Blooms by Yuval Zommer - For anyone whose kids are the in the “why” stage, this is a great pick. Each book is full of informative factoids about bugs and flowers that your kid will love repeating (and you’ll learn something too). The books are also oversized which adds an element of fun.

  • Hello Hello by Brendan Wenzel - Every page in this book is stunning and shows diverse and opposite animals - big animals and small animals, brightly colored animals and black and white animals, animals with huge ears and animals with small ears, etc. Brendan Wenzel has a more recent book, A Stone Sat Still, which is described as “an environmental and nature book for kids” of which we’re also fans.

  • National Parks of the U.S.A by Kate Siber - We originally bought this to prepare for our cross country roadtrip and we still pull it out all the time to learn about national parks we’d love to visit someday.

  • Tiny Perfect Things - This new favorite was part of a recent library haul and tells the sweetest story of a little girl and her grandfather taking a walk together and enjoying all the tiny little things they see.

  • Hank’s Big Day : The Story of a Bug by Evan Kuhlman & Chuck Groenink - Another recent library pickup, this cute story tells the tale of a young girl and her best friend, a teeny pill bug, as they adventure through the neighborhood.
